Step 1: Draw a picture of something simple. Tell your child what you drew. For example, you might draw a hand. 

Step 2: Ask your child to identify the sound and write the letter that the picture begins with.  

Step 3: Help your child make up a funny sentence that uses the sound of the letter and the picture that you drew. For example you might say:

“Happy Hannah holds hearts in her hands.” 

Step 4: Write the sentence at the bottom of the paper. Ask your child to circle all of the letters that make the same sound as the picture.  

Make it easier by increasing the amount of support and modeling you give to your child. Write the letter “Hh” at the top of the paper and ask your child to say the sound that “Hh” makes. After you write the funny sentence, you might say: 

“I see the letter ‘Hh.’ It makes the /h/ sound. Look at these words on the paper and circle the letter ‘Hh’ each time you see it.” 

Add some challenge by asking your child to draw another picture of something that begins with the same sound as the picture you drew. For example, your child might draw a picture of a basketball hoop to go alongside the picture of the hand you drew.
